Reflecting on 2011, I am most gracious to the very talented and OH so sweet Courtney Dox for allowing me to second shoot with her for a couple of her weddings! Not only was I able to snag some awesome images for my portfolio, but I was able to observe her in action which was a wonderful learning opportunity for me as I'm a very visual learner. I love to second shoot weddings; they allow me the coveted time with my son at this point in my life as a working, stay-at-home-mommy. There are so many memories I want to make with him while he is still home with me and not in school yet! Second shooting allows me this time with him since I simply hand over my images to the main photographer that night, un-edited (YIKES. lol), and I don't have to worry with them any more for that wedding. It also allows me to practice techniques I'm steadily educating myself about, thus I'm continually growing in what I l.o.v.e to do!!! So, thank you Courtney for entrusting me to represent your business!

Project Life | Kit Giveaway

As most of you know, I chose to participate in Becky Higgins' Project Life in 2011 and it has become a part of my every day life to actually grab a camera, any camera, and snap a picture of a memory! When January 1, 2012 rolled around, I didn't just say "whew! Done with that project!" because it had become second nature for me, after a year of it, to grab the closest camera and take a daily picture; I simply continued without even realizing it on into 2012! The Project Life Kit by Becky Higgins has taken this every-day task and provided a back to basics approach to memory keeping in the hard-copy form. You know, actually having your digital files turned into actual prints and compiled into a nice binder... or there is also a digital option where you print everything into an actual photo album book at the end of the year. And guess what? You will then have an actual hard-copy photo album, you know, to share with your grandparents who don't have computers! LOL I prefer the binder because I like to keep little snip-its of stuff-- child artwork, movie stubs, etc.-- and add them to my binder. So... this is what I bring you today, because preserving your life's memories is so near and dear to my heart, I am giving ONE kit away (not digital) to a deserving memory keeper like myself! ;) A kit will contain (1)-12x12 Binder, (1)-Project Life Core Kit, and (1)- big pack of photo pocket pages.

Diggin' Taters

I started 2011 out with my Project Life posts on this blog, but as the year went by I found posting here became hard, due only to the lack of time. Before actually trying to post to this blog, I had however become a part of a private blog between friends stretched all across the United States-- South Carolina, Arkansas, Montana, and Idaho-- where I was able to keep up with my weeks and the journaling needed to complete my actual Project Life binder that I'm still slowly piecing together! ;) I met the gal that started the private blog when we lived in Tennessee, a move we had to make for my husband's career with the US Forest Service. Her husband also works with the Forest Service and they have since moved to Arkansas, and then on to Montana. So, Forest Service friends enter but then have to somewhat leave our lives so often. :( It's been an awesome process as I've witnessed a week-by-week documentation of other's lives as they have of mine. I'm so grateful for the little community we have developed and I think to myself how neat it would have been for my parents to have had the internet access that we do now so that they could better keep up with the friends they've made through their moves made with the Forest Service (my dad is retired from the Forest Service).

And I said all that to say, there have been so many moments captured throughout 2011, that I really do want to share publicly with you all. Since time prohibits me from sharing every picture... well and the fact that I don't want to put our family life SO out there on internet world, I will slowly but surely share some of our memories.

I look back now, and I look into the future and I realize I only desire one thing for my family and that is to have our memories documented because, and I'm not sure who I quote here, "someday you will be someone's memory!" I want my child and any future children we may be so blessed to raise, to be able to look back and remember how we lived when they were toddlers, the foods they ate or didn't eat, what they played with and how they played, the walks we take, the messes they made, their facial expressions, their antics, what their daddy loved to do, who their dog was at the time, and the list goes on and on! There are so many moment's as a parent of a toddler that I will never get back so I don't want to miss a thing!!! I'm blessed enough to be able to be home with my son and I will be ever so grateful that God has blessed my husband with a job that can support this type of life, and a passion and God-given talent of mine that helps out a little on the side too!

So my friends, from this point on, you will experience a little of the Jennings' life! ;) Brace yourselves. lol

So... in between the craziness of running a small business, editing pictures, photographing sessions, raising a two year old, being a wife, chef, house-keeper, and many other things, we managed to find time to...

... visit the zoo. I don't think little guy was quite sure about the Gorilla!

...and dig taters with the aunt and uncle! :)

... and even do a little bird hunting with daddy and mommy! ;)

I'm so thankful anytime a picture is snapped with me in it too because I want my children to look back and see me at times rather than just know mommy is there, she's just behind the camera all the time! Thanks so much to my husband here for breaking out the ole point and shoot!

Website Face-lift

It's been LONG overdue-- the little face-lift that my website has received. I'm so excited about it because it now showcases all of my updated work and a little more detail about my business. Such as... why I have a tree as part of my logo and even how I got my birth name, Charlotte Ashley! lol.

More perks... it is compatible with ipads and iphones! It has sooo many more text options than my last, and even a video option. One of these days I will be hiring a professional videographer to compile a 'biography video' (for lack of better terms), to open my website which will showcase exactly who I am and how I work. Just makes a website a little more personable I guess for first time visitors! ;)

Merry Christmas!

Yes, I am aware that Christmas has come and gone, once again (so sad!), but I hope all of you had a very merry one! And once again, I couldn't coordinate a time for our family photo between all the sessions, editing, shopping, traveling, etc.; and all of my husband's hunting and fishing too. So here you have it, another attempt at the ole trusty self-timer and tripod method. LOL I ended with about 20 shots on my camera. Most of them looked something like this--

But in the end-- and NO light left-- we settled for this shot and a few others to decorate our Christmas card :)

In 2011, I did decide to utilize a designer for albums and holiday card templates. I ran across Sarah Gourdie from a random google search and fell in LOVE with her style and designs! Our card is from one of her templates, just customized and tweaked a bit to fit what I needed. Buying design templates helped me out BUNCHES throughout the year with the time crunch I seem to always be in these days, being a work-from-home mommy of a two year old! ;)

Giving Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving to all my faithful followers! :) I hope you all have enjoyed a day full of laughter and smiles with friends and family because this is most important in life! I know it seems I've abandoned my blog at times, however it's because I'm choosing to spend that time with a cute little red-head that is growing up too fast. I'm staying "photo busy" with random sessions here and there that I'll post about later as time permits, but today I did want to make a point to post about one of the people I'm most thankful that God has placed in my life. We ventured out last week to play in some cotton; I'll just say he wasn't too enthused or amazed by cotton. lol But, after leaving a little bummed that I didn't capture any cute pictures of him, I did find these little treasures upon downloading my images from the day. He has stolen my heart.

So... I will say, the picture above is my attempt to be in front of the camera rather than behind. :) This shot took WAY too much work (tripod, pre-focusing using a light stand that is knocked down on the ground behind us, grabbing child, and running into place before the self-timer went off). LOL BUT... I'll always cherish this one. Batman even made it into the photo! (my child is obsessed with Batman at age 2. Is this normal? ha.) And even though he looked disgusted, he actually was just doing a "hurry, give me a kiss" face. hehe

In this next picture, we found a huge bale of cotton! He was pretty impressed with this. lol

I decided not to photoshop out the dirt on his face in the next picture. He had fallen quite a few times and was extremely dirty by this point and had rubbed it all over his face and new outfit. hehe But oh well. It's about having fun!

What a gorgeous November day! I must say, it was actually a beautiful 70 degree day. Yes, I realize my son was wearing a sweater, but it came off immediately after snapping some pictures! It was all in the name of fashion. ha.

Thanks be to God for gorgeous sights like this and fun times had with my son!

Brab and Jillian | Charleston, SC Wedding Photographer

If you don't remember Brab and Jillian from our 2011 Most Unique Proposal Contest, I encourage you to return to the link and read their proposal story! Oh how romantic!!! Well, I finally had the privilege to photograph their wedding in Charleston, SC at The Citadel October 8, 2011. After meeting through some mutual friends in 2007, then maintaining a long distance relationship while Brab was deployed to Iraq, we'll just say they've anticipated this moment of their lives for a while now; and what a beautiful wedding day they had!

Brab and Jillian opted to do a First Look and I'm so glad they did! What an intimate moment for just the two of them-- to be able to slow down and just be together "alone" for a few moments on their wedding day, aside from all the hustle and bustle. How special it must be for your groom to be the VERY first person to see you in your wedding gown... coming down stairs too. What a fairy tale!!!

We were then able to capture a few shots of just bride and groom together!

And moved on into group shots... all before the ceremony! So you see, a First Look is also awesome from a photography work-flow standpoint. This is the beautiful and historic Joseph Aiken Carriage House.

More awesome shots from the day! Many, many, MANY thanks to my friend and fellow photog Heather who I ordered around all day. LOL She captured this awesome shot of the shoes and bouquet for me while I was running around elsewhere and setting up for group shots!

Isn't Jillian BEAUTIFUL!?!? Her hair and make-up were done by Paper Dolls- Wedding Hair and Makeup.

We then made our way over to the Summerall Chapel at The Citadel. This photo was actually taken the day before when I arrived in Charleston for the rehearsal. I was able to witness a Friday parade!

After the beautiful ceremony, Brab and Jillian held a reception at the Charleston Yacht Club where they had a down-home barbecue dinner!

Brab and Jillian collected all of the little bottles from an old home-place for the center pieces.

The entertainment and AWESOME band for the night was The Sugarbees.

And before the night was over, I pulled the newlyweds off to the dock for a few more shots of just them!

Brab and Jillian, I am so honored that I was able to be a part of your wedding day! Thank you so much for playing along with the little proposal contest :) And I hope the two of you have had a fabulous time in St. Croix soaking in the sun while we're breaking out the long-sleeves here. Little Boy Lucas | Columbia, SC Newborn Photographer

I love little Lucas; he, even at 5 weeks old, challenged me as a photographer. And that my friends is why I love photography! There is always a challenge and never a dull moment... even with little newborns who pretty much stay put where you lay them :) I will ALWAYS cherish this first photo of this little one because I wanted to jump up and down and scream it to all the world after I captured this frame because I was nervous that the "sleepy" baby pictures just were not going to happen with him. But, you know, couldn't do that because I had big plans for more sleeping baby pictures :)

Ok, so to be very honest with my readers here, this newborn session took two tries. In attempts to capture the sleeping baby, our first round resulted in some not so sleepy baby shots, but they are just as cute!!! Look at his beautiful eyes!!!

And YES, I'm a Clemson fan! This little one was too cute regardless of his Carolina attire. Kyle and Frances, I enjoyed meeting you and your little Lucas. Thank you for trusting me to capture this special moment in your lives; and I hope you enjoyed this little sneak- peek of the wonderful photos that are yet to come!

14 Year Anniversary

You may not believe me when I say this, but there really is something I love more than ice cream, smoothies or pizza. It's the man I've been married to now for 7 years! You may not remember our little love story so here's the link once again. :) August 14, 2011 we celebrated 7 years of marriage (really 14 as we dated for 7 years before being married). We decided to splurge a little and have a little getaway sans child (which we needed desperately!). We tried this last year, but our son decided to cut his one year molars the same weekend and well, you know how that goes... fever, snotty nose, diarrhea, etc. so our little getaway came to a halt. But this year, well... he decided to start cutting his two year molars the SAME anniversary weekend as last. Sheesh. Thankfully, my parents convinced me that he would be ay-ok with them and for us to continue with the original plans. :) So, after the hubs put in a couple hours at the office, we made our way to Charleston, SC!!!

I can honestly say that I have coastal blood because well, I do. There's just something inside of me that yearns to be on the coast. Always. It was hard for me at times living in TN, which is a land-locked state; I couldn't just wake up one morning and decide I wanted to take a little day trip to the beach. I'm truly a Carolina Girl! So off we go. We stayed at the Jasmine House Inn which was lovely for so many reasons! Look how inviting :)

Cheese and wine anyone? YES PLEASE. And thank you!

After a few glasses of wine, we made our way downtown for dinner. I loved that we could just walk wherever and not have to fight traffic! We had dinner at the Husk Restaurant and then enjoyed a moonlit walk along the waterfront park. Ahhhhhhh. A very much needed evening for this gal!

The next day we went to the Charleston Museum. Very much worth the money! Why is it that for me, History was the hardest subject in school for me to enjoy, but now I want to soak up as much history as possible the older I become? This was definitely the place to do that! And after the museum we made our way to the John's Island Angel Oak tree. How majestic and beautiful! Another fun fact: my grandfather proposed to my grandmother here some 50 years ago or so.

After taking in this beauty and a local watermelon from a roadside market for lunch, we ventured to McClellanville, SC to find some true seafood, you know, straight from the docks-- shrimp and oysters and crabs, oh MY! And that's exactly what we found at T.W. Graham and Co.! The food was AhhhMAZING. We had crab, shrimp and corn chowder for an app, then a grilled shrimp and black-eyed pea salad (me) and grilled shrimp dinner (hubby) for main, with some good ole sweet tea and key lime pie for dessert! I can't describe in words how good this place is!!! After dinner we did a little sight seeing in McClellanville and decided that when we retire, this is where you will find us Jennings'. hehe. In our ramblings, I saw this scene and it just beckoned for me to take a picture of it. lol I think it must have been that gorgeous tree! Now, I'm thinking I need to photograph a wedding here for sure!

I'm so blessed; thank you Lord for my husband and his flexible job, my life, my family, my camera, and beautiful places and spaces! Amen.

Baby Jaxton | Aynor, SC Maternity Photographer

You may remember Jarred and Jessica's wedding photos from last year, well... I am soo proud to announce to the blog world that they are expecting their first little BOY, due November 20-- which is also their first anniversary! :) Last weekend, not only was I able to attend this lovely's baby shower, but also take her maternity portraits-- one of my favorite types, so naturally I was excited! And another perk was that I was able to drive all around Aynor, SC to do so :) I have had some great times there with college friends, and it was just awesome to visit again!

Jessica, thank you so much for considering me for capturing this special moment of your life. And let it be known my blog friends that she rocked. it. out! Jessica is just one of those naturals in front of a camera; she was even striking poses (not meaning to) while I was switching lenses. This is the type of session every photographer prays for! :) The only bummer was that Jarred couldn't join us as he is in training at the moment for his upcoming deployment to Southern Afghanistan. Please keep this couple in your prayers, among the rest who are sacrificing their lives and time with their families and newborns to defend our country!

Jessica, you look absolutely amazing and I know I said it a hundred times Saturday, but I'm so excited that you are having a little boy!!! :) Enjoy your little sneak-peek, wish I could post them all!

Cure for the Common Life

I was eleven years old (or so). It was summertime. I had just experienced an awesome week of music camp with my church group, and it was talent show time! I'm a VERY outgoing person and this was right up my alley; I wanted a talent to perform in the show! So... I called my mom and asked her if I had any talents. LOL I don't recall figuring one out in time for the show, but I would like to think that now, eighteen years later, I'm on my way to discovering my uniqueness-- my talents, my skills-- in this life. Ones that are mine; mine alone to use in honoring God, first and foremost!

About two years ago, I began reading the book Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado, and I'm proud to announce that I'm 96.8% finished with it as of last weekend! I really love to read; really I do. It's finding the time to do so that is hard for me. Rawr.

I only had to read the first three sentences of the back of this book to know that it would be making its way home with me! It read...

"God made only one version of you. He custom designed you for a one-of-a-kind assignment. Cure for the Common Life helps you discover how your ability unveils your destiny... and how to find your uncommon call to an uncommon life."

I struggle a lot balancing all the hats of my life (just ask my husband!)-- wife, mommy, photographer, personal chef, family historian, barber, laundry service, accountant, peacemaker, teacher, guidance counselor etc.-- sometimes it gets the best of me; as I'm sure it does many. Last weekend I was having one of those particular "balance breakdowns" that I hope I'm not the only woman to ever make. But alas, I was afforded some nice quiet time to immerse myself (fully!) into this awesome book!

My book literally looks as if a pink highlighter puked all in it. I was reminded that I was "born prepacked. God looked at [my] entire life, determined [my] assignment, and gave [me] the tools to do the job" (pg. 13). So, this book became an assessment of my life, forcing me to write down and hash through my past-- moments of success and satisfaction thus far-- in order to discover my "sweet spot." What fascinations did He give me? What makes my pulse race and my eyebrows arch? What makes me want to look up into the heavens and say, "I was made to do this"? I was reminded to "color Christ with the crayons God gave me!" (pg. 52). Powerful stuff. And last but certainly not least, I was reminded that in order to find my so- called "sweet spot", I must, 1. use my uniqueness, 2. to make a big deal out of God, 3. every day of my life!

So by the end of the assessment of my past (like 5 pages of writing in detail all my successes and satisfactions) it was determined that... are you ready?... I am right where I feel I am supposed to be! :) Whew. Thank goodness. lol I, my friends, am meant to uplift the spirits of people I encounter in life and while traveling through art, dancing, music, and smiles! If that doesn't sound like a wedding photographer and a stay-at-home err, work-from-home-mom all at the same time, I don't know what does!?!?!

God's creation is beautiful and inspires me EVERY day. This is where my photography began-- nature. So... I felt it only appropriate to leave you with this photo captured about a month ago in the yard of our TN home. Not to mention that daisies are my favorite flowers, but this photo surfaces so many feelings within me. I'm reminded of TN naturally since it was taken there; I'm reminded of being pregnant with my son in TN because it was the rainiest Spring they had, had in 48 years (not really, but I was pregnant and stuck INSIDE looking out the window at the daisies). I'm reminded of all the home-made bouquets of wildflowers that my husband will randomly pick for me to brighten my day! And just so many more things that are a God-send in my life! I am so blessed!

Two Awesome Years

You may remember this post from a year ago-- my son at one year old! Well, I can. not. believe it, but yet another year has flown by and that little sweetie is now the big two year old :( Times are fun, no doubt, but I just can't believe he is growing so fast!

Since turning two he has started "singing" with the radio to certain songs; more specifically, Jason Aldean's Don't You Wanna Stay. He has started mumbling with us when we say the blessing. He continues to carry on conversations with us in Toddlerese and then dying laughing at the end, or ending his sentence with a random "truck, car, train, or key." He loves to play under the covers. He loves his doggie sister and tortures her daily, but she loves it too. :) He is potty trained (!!!) and calls peepeeing "bonk" and pooing "pooch." He loves "gwnny's cars" and to go for long golf cart rides around the farm with papaw. He still won't say "grandma" for grandma, and just laughs when we try and prompt him to. hehe His favorite movie of course is Cars; and, he loves blueberries, or for that matter, any fruit!

Gwnny was the one helping me with this little mini-session of him and he just adores her! Here are all the faces we extracted from Mr. Gus!

After re-visiting the same wheat field where we took his one year photos, we ventured to the sunflower field! :)

Gus, we love you with all our hearts and pray that you never cease being adventurous and laughing throughout life; your voice is music to our ears and just the sight of you every day makes our hearts sing!

Lee Brothers Visit the SC State Farmer's Market

A few weeks back I was so privileged to be invited by Chernoff Newman's David Anderson to observe a corporate photo shoot of The Lee Brothers, Matt and Ted, by Keith Lanpher Photography at Hugh Weather's home, the SC Commissioner of Agriculture. This photo shoot was organized in efforts to promote Certified South Carolina Grown food. I must say this was a neat experience for me as I haven't witnessed this level of photography before. I was extremely impressed with the set-up required to handle one needed exposure. Now, there were multiple exposures captured of course, but the outcome was to be that one perfect shot. Here are a few photos (snapped with a little point and shoot camera, mind you) of what went on that day. I would say it took nearly four hours to set this up, maybe longer; and Keith and his team were very informative of their actions along the way. HOLY light diffuser is all I have to say.

The following photo is the type of shot they were striving for. I'm sure they didn't use this frame because they tweaked a few things here and there, but final product will yield Matt and Ted cut from that background in post-processing and added in a farm scene which was shot the day before. You can click here to see the finished product and register to win a free supper for your supper club! After this day of observations, I now have a new appreciation for food photography. I promise most of the day (like 6 or 7 hours) was spent preparing that one plate of food! They even broke out the blow torch, heated up a skewer, and added little "grill" lines to the kielbasa sausage. Wowza. I must say I was drooling. LOVE low country boil.

Well... some five weeks later, I received a phone call asking if I could be at the SC State Farmer's Market
first thing the next morning to document the Lee Brother's visit. YES please. I was able to combine two of my loves-- photography and agriculture! (I actually have a Masters of Agricultural Education from Clemson University.) I can safely say I now know what being the paparazzi feels like. lol It was a different style photography than I'm used to, but was again, such a neat experience! So I leave you, on this lovely Wednesday, with some shots of Matt and Ted Lee browsing through the SC State Farmer's Market.

My life's journey never ceases to amaze me. This past weekend I photographed the wedding of two sweethearts that I had the pleasure of teaching while doing my 'student teaching' before graduating from college (with a teaching degree mind you. lol) Who knew that six years later, I would be their wedding photographer!?!?

Before I proceed with their wedding sneak peek, I couldn't resist showing y'all this picture: hehe. Please don't kill me Kelli!

Brian and Kelli both were a part of the 2005 SC State Champion FFA Wildlife CDE (career development event) team that I was so privileged to have been a part in training as assistant advisor to Frank Stover, Jr. at Pelion High School.

But fast forward five years, Facebook has taken over the internet world, and Kelli and I reconnected. I was so excited to hear that her and Brian, who had started dating while I was teaching, were still dating! Then after about a year of 'being friends' on Facebook, she contacted me about my photography, and well, here I am :) I also had the pleasure of photographing their engagement session about two months ago! They are one fun couple to hang with.

Last Saturday, June 18th was their wedding date. I ventured to their homeland in Norway, SC for a small outdoor ceremony and reception surrounded by the closest of their friends and family. So special! Another family member opened up her home to Kelli to prepare for her debut. I must add here too that the other lady in the picture above was Kayla, Kelli's BFF. And the little snippet of a face and hands you see in the following picture is also Kayla helping her into her gorgeous dress! Kelli used hot pink in the wedding details to accent the outdoor/ country theme.

Kelli, I can't even explain in words how gorgeous you were! It was all perfect.

Tootsie is such a diva. I've never dealt with any client like this before. She thought she was too good for the camera! lol But through all the running around, I managed to capture these shots of Kelli's little bridesmaid at heart. She watched as her mommy got into her beautiful dress.

Again, simply a stunning bride. Brian is one lucky fella! Tootsie is in awe as well.

And here we have the most handsome groom "so fresh and so clean, clean." lol I say that because the poor guy was running around like a mad man all day before his wedding helping finalize all the beautiful details. Brian, you are just too sweet.

More details from the day. I LOVED, loved, loved the canopy net protecting the cake. Looked so elegant and Southern.

And the view of where the ceremony took place. This was snapped just after the ceremony before family formals began. Yes, that would be a storm brewing. But it yielded some awesome lighting for family pictures!

So after the ceremony and making it 3/4 of the way through the family formals line-up, I had to split! This photographer does NOT deal well with being outside in lightening storms; I blame that on the college summer while working for the US Forest Service-- I was out doing my work and a storm blew in on me unexpectedly. And... I'm pretty sure my equipment wouldn't deal well with being drenched. So to the house we went-- me, the bride and groom, and a couple others. All the rest ran to the tent where the reception was to take place. Ran. I never stopped the photo taking though; it's all documented. Here is Kelli checking out the torrential downpour and storm that has unfolded wondering how she would make it across the way to the reception. After about ten minutes, we finally had a little break in the rain, enough that I covered my gear with a blanket and had someone run me out to the tent with an umbrella. This second photo is what was underway when I made it there. So... we all just kicked off our shoes and had a big 'ole time! :)

But alas, Brian and Kelli made it to the reception and were all smiles!

And with the help of Party Time DJs and Robert Elwood, the reception proceeded wonderfully amidst the high winds and rains.

Before I had my gear packed to leave, Brian and Kelli returned to the party for one last goodbye to everyone so I of course, grabbed them for one last shot of the evening too... just to document that it was still drizzling :)

Brian and Kelli, as you drink one more electric lemonade in Key West, know that I thank you both for remembering me in your search for a wedding photographer! I enjoyed being a part of your beautiful day!!!

Priceless Picnic

They met at Clemson University, and after dating only four months, Brantley proposed. And seven months later, they were married in this very same pecan orchard/ cow pasture. Now... almost six years later, Brantley and Carrie have brought two of the cutest little boys into this world as a start to their little family!

I was so fortunate to have met Carrie during our days at Clemson, and have gained a friend for life! In fact, and she'll tell ya too, we're both pretty sure we were sisters separated at birth! We have SO much in common that it's even a little scary at times.

When contacted about doing some family photos, of course my mind started churning for kid-friendly ideas, and what better than to have a little picnic! We needed to make a visit to the Falls anyways!

Oh how I love this picture! This was snapped just as Carrie made the comment that this is usually how they wake up in bed each morning anyways, so why not have a photo of it. LOL

Hmm... not sure what these two are conjuring up?!?!

One thing that I love about Brantley and Carrie is that they are just as much in love as they were when they started dating. All the times I've been around them, they still make each other laugh so much!

Look. at. these. blue-eyed babies! LOVE them.

The full view of our little picnic :) How peaceful it was. There were quail in the distance and not the first sound of traffic! Just our families and the laughter (and cries too) from the boys. And as a side note, the beautiful quilt was a wedding gift to Brantley and Carrie. I was so glad she wanted to work it into the photos!

Today I leave you with this: Mater and the cows. Now Mater can do some true cow-tippin', but he looks a bit worried about it! hehe. This photo will always make me think of the Caldwell family. Reason being, the first time that my husband and I saw the movie Cars was with Brantley and Carrie at the Big Mo drive-in theater before either family had children. LOL And now, my son (the Cars fanatic and owner of little Mater here) and the Caldwell boys (cows courtesy them) will always be remembered on this stylized picnic.

This was fun guys. We must make this a tradition!!!

iHeart {Traveling}

Not only do I travel in order to photograph weddings, but it seems lately that it's been more so for personal reasons. And it makes it so much more worth the while when I can involve photography somehow! Because you know, you can't lose sight of why you originally pick up a camera, right? For me it was nature.

So back in April, I ventured to Whitmire, SC to photograph a prescribed burn gone wrong. Well, to be honest, I have compassion for both parties involved in this incident because 1. I personally know the landowner of the destroyed timber and know the time and money lost on their part, while on the other hand 2. I'm the daughter of a forester who was burn boss on the Sumter National Forest for a bit and know the stress the responsible party, whom I also personally know, was under. A prescribed burn should not scorch the canopy of a stand of timber; however, this burn got way too hot and did just that.

Later that same week I ventured to Branchville, SC to photograph my uncle's farm which is located along the Edisto River. He has several crops in production such as blueberries, figs, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, etc. Here is the field of blueberries just planted this year.

Being property adjacent the Edisto River, I was able to snap some awesome shots there as well.

As most anyone, I spend a lot of time close to 'home' which is Cross Anchor, SC for me. While there, I frequent Molly's Farm Strawberry Patch! Strawberries are a favorite of mine. Mmmm. I love everything about them, not only the taste but the fresh smell lingering throughout the whole area!

Moseying on over into May, my family and I made our way down to the SC coast for a little R&R one weekend-- Litchfield Beach. All I have to say is praise the Lord for my MIL as she stayed put with my son (who did not like the beach) during his nap time. I mean really, when was the last time I could totally devote ALL of my brain to a good read?!?! Speaking of a good read, One Thousand Gifts by Anne Voskamp is the book of choice at this point and a great one at that!

Two days after returning from Litchfield Beach, we ventured to Cleveland, Tennessee. We used to live there, and it will forever be a place that we vacation! We love and miss it so much :/ During our last visit, I was able to capture a picture of the 13 year cicadas that are surfacing throughout the Southeast. We have them here in SC too, but until now, I was unable to really capture a close-up of one.

I really do miss the ridge and valley land of East TN. Here is a snapshot I captured on Hwy 58 between Decatur and Georgetown! This was a marketing tactic started during the Great Depression by Rock City which is located near Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, TN. You can see barns painted with "See Rock City" as far North as Michigan and as far West as Texas.

Baby Anna's Birth Story

I love when couples do not find out the gender of their babies; it makes for such an even more awesome surprise when the birth day actually happens! This family has gone both ways, having found out the gender of only one of their four. And that fourth child arrived on June 9, 2011 at 8:42 am.

Being the sweet husband that he is, Adam prepared for baby #4 in more ways that one. He even gave his wife a pedicure in honor of the upcoming event :)

Annnnd... wait for it... SHE was born-- Anna Louise-- with two dimples and curly, red hair! The pink and the "girl" are worthy of noting here because the long awaited, baby girl Anna already has three big brothers!

Mommy's princess weighed in at 7 lbs. 8oz. Kudos to daddy for working the camera for the weight shot as I was not allowed into the nursery for it :)

And, this would be my FAV from the day. Sooo sweet.

Be Still

Becoming a mother almost 2 years ago *sigh, why do they grow so fast?* brought my life, as I knew it, to a screeching halt. God is teaching me patience in a form that I've never known it before. I would plan my days out hour-by-hour and not miss a beat. Somewhat OCD about it actually. I could accomplish errands in two hours flat. I paid all bills on time. I loved to grocery shop and could be home with two weeks worth of groceries in 2 hours. I washed all laundry, folded, and put them away in the same day. I deep-cleaned the house one day a week. These things made me happy and defined me!

Little by little, I become more relaxed on my OCD habits and just let it fall by the way side, it seems. I'm learning more and more each day how to cope with this. Yes, how. It has been a big, BIG adjustment for me. And to think all I thought I would have to adjust to was tending to a baby. hehe. I still do all the above mentioned tasks, just not with the enthusiasm I once had. I have better reasons to be enthused now! Actually the tasks above have become dreaded chores because I would rather spend my God-given time picking berries, chasing bubbles, racing micro-machines, playing in the dirt, looking at bugs, picking wildflowers, feeding the birds, and the list goes on. Don't get me wrong, I've always enjoyed these outdoor activities, but having an 'almost' 2 year old (holding off on that as long as I can) makes it all the more memorable! And you can bet, my camera is right there with!

God reminds me daily to be still; to soak in the beauty around me; to be thankful for what I do have, not worry about what I don't have or am not accomplishing. Moment's like this one from right here in my yard.

Learning To Use Your Camera: Part III

This post continues the journey into how I self-taught myself to use my camera. Don't forget to read part one and part two before reading this post!

So, after killing myself in the beginning while post-processing my images (taken in semi-auto mode, mind you), to perfect them to where I wanted them, I decided something HAD to give as my time became so much more precious with the birth of our first child in June 2009. I no longer had the time for editing that I had pre-child. And with a little push from the instructor of a workshop I attended in 2010, I became a manual shooter which has changed my overall straight out of camera (SOOC) shots dramatically! HANDS DOWN.

I learned one little snippet of information at that workshop which made everything all clear to me. You know, it was one of those "Ah ha!" moments! That bit of info was simply this-- a camera when in auto or semi-auto modes strives to achieve 18% gray in its output. WHO knew? The 18% gray is what I wanted to make disappear from my pictures. I wanted skin tones to display exactly as I was seeing them through the camera, thus the only way to control this output is to control my camera the way I wanted to, not the way it wanted to. I'm sure this is one of the first concepts they teach you in a college photography program, but for a self-taught photog, I had never stumbled upon this information. This explained why I never could shoot a snowy scene and have it look white, like I was seeing with my eye. There was always a gray haze to the photos. Hmm? There's that 18% gray right there, when shot in auto or semi-auto modes. And with that, I switched my camera dial to M, right there in the workshop, and headed to a session that same afternoon, never to look back.

Well... ok, there is only one situation that I switch my dial back to aperture priority mode for and that is when light is constantly changing. For example, photographing a bride and groom coming down the church aisle as husband and wife requires a certain exposure, but what if I want to quickly turn and snap a shot of them exiting the church door (which throws a flood of light on the shot)? It is possible to handle it manually, but just to be on the safe side, and rather than chance blowing out the shot, I switch over and just let the camera deal with it :)

So now that we are all changing our dials to M, break out that owner manual and figure out how to not only change the aperture (mentioned in part II), but also the shutter speed to make the little +/ - dial inside the viewfinder eyepiece equal zero. Then... practice, practice, practice. :)

And you know me, can't leave a post without a picture! This was taken on my uncle's farm in Branchville, SC along the Edisto River. I love black water rivers and swampland. It takes me back to my days of cruising timber for Rayonier, Inc. along the Altamaha river in Jesup, GA.

It's the sweetest story, really. While I was pouring my heart into my lessons as their high school agriculture student-teacher at the time (6 years ago or so), Kelli and Brian were stealing each others hearts; right there in class; right in front of me! They are high school sweeties and it all officially began with a little goodbye kiss in the parking lot. Is that allowed? lol. I told you... so sweeeet!

Little did I know that years down the road, thanks to good ole Facebook, we would all cross paths again. So here they are; and here I am as their official wedding photographer on June 18th. Learning To Use A Camera: Part II

This post continues the journey into how I self-taught myself to use my camera. Don't forget to read part one before reading this post! And stay tuned for a third post in the future.

Bokeh-- This is a little word that honestly I didn't learn until my third year into photography. LOL I learned how to achieve bokeh early off, but didn't know it was called bokeh until years later. It refers to the blur of photographs. When I started out (and by no means do I know it all about photography) I kept seeing pictures where the background was really blurry and I wanted that! But I didn't know how to get it. So I did some research and finally learned it is controlled by the aperture of your camera.

My advice to any of you with cameras who have the ability to manipulate your aperture, if you want that effect, learn how to take your aperture setting down as low (in number) as possible. Ex. 3.5 is usually about as low as you can go with camera kit lenses. I have lenses that function at apertures of 2.8 and even 1.4 and they are the bomb! (Note: when reading about aperture a lot of times there will be a little "f" in front of the number). This number basically allows your lens to take in more light the lower the number which also blurs the background. So... on the flip side, if you have a higher number such as f5.6 or f16 even, your background content will be more in focus than it would at f2.8 or f3.5.

So how did I grasp this concept, I started shooting with my camera in aperture priority mode (semi-auto as discussed in the first post). On the camera dial it is A for Nikon, and Av I believe, for Canon. You, as the camera operator, control which aperture you want to use, but the camera chooses everything else. This is just how I did it. By no means am I saying it's the best way because now knowing how to shoot manual mode (M for Nikon) is by FAR the best thing I've ever done for the quality of my pictures straight out of camera (SOOC)! HANDS DOWN. I had to do a lot more post-processing when shooting A mode to get the exposure that I wanted for skin tones. But different strokes for different folks on that because I like my photos to be a tad bit over-exposed.

So, I challenge you to take the plunge and become somewhat in charge of the outcome of your pictures (vs. auto mode where the camera chooses the outcome) by learning to manipulate the aperture! Break out that owner's manual.

Commitment to the Environment

Without realizing it, the practices that my family and I have chosen to honor in our every day lives have inadvertently spilled over into my photography business. I've already set in place some green practices with my business for a while now, I just haven't really brought it to anyone's attention through my marketing techniques. And with that said, this is step one in those endeavors.

If you've ever read my biography for my site, you already know my love for the environment. I was raised up a forester's daughter, have a Forest Resource Management degree myself, and am married to a forester/ soil scientist/ hydrologist. So my background kept me in the woods, which is the very place I still find myself a lot of times when I need to slow down and relax. Throughout my life I've developed an appreciation for our natural resources, and I want my children, and my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren to be afforded the same opportunities and resources that I was, from our environment. Sustainability is the word for that; I believe that what we practice today will secure the futures of our succeeding generations. We owe this to them!

I am not a "tree-hugger" or "bunny-hugger"; I am a Christian who believes that God created the Heavens and the Earth and that it is our responsibility, by being good stewards of the land, to take care of what we have been so graciously given to enjoy. I believe that we humans are slowly destroying the very resources that keep us alive. We wouldn't be ANYwhere without our soil first and foremost. It is our life source-- our food; our water purification system; in combination with trees, our air purification; and so much more! I believe our resources should be utilized, but in a conservative and sustainable manner. *exiting soap box*

So you may be questioning yourself, "what exactly do you do Charlotte, that is so-called green?" Well... glad you asked :)

I use digital cameras instead of film, reducing the left over harsh chemicals from processing the film.
I display and share client photos using an online photo gallery as opposed to proofs.
I'm making the switch to a professional print lab who are environmentally conscious and offer eco-friendly products; however, I will still use my current lab for other products requested by the client that is not offered by the new lab.
I encourage clients to only print the photos they want to display prominently.
I use rechargeable batteries in my equipment.
I reuse shipping boxes and packing material received.
I recycle all paper, cardboard, bubble wrap, styrofoam, plastics, cans and bottles; and, I am proud to say that my family and I use and recycle/ reuse more glass than plastic. We even managed to eat a whole gallon of pickles just so that I could have the jar for liquid storage! :) lol But now we know more about food colorings and wouldn't eat them next time due to the Yellow #5 in them, but that's another story. tehe
I clean air filters frequently to keep furnace and A/C working efficiently.
I reduce trips to essentials and do more than one errand per trip.
I have my automobile fluids changed at a facility that recycles them.
I unplug unused power supplies that use energy even when nothing's attached.

And these, my friends, are only a few of the ways we can better utilize our resources. I'm sure I've left out quite a few.

OH yeah, and I use eco-friendly cleaning supplies! I leave you with my "green" photo challenge photos :)

Couldn't decide which "green" route I wanted to take for this challenge. So... like I mentioned above, my husband is a soil scientist; we are VERY mindful as to what we dump into our world's purification system (the soil). Thus we use eco-friendly cleaners around our home as they are dumped into our septic systems which are purified by the soil at some point and returned to us as drinking water. And then... I snapped a picture of our son eating his breakfast one morning. Salsa scrambled eggs with a side of avocado in his green pjs :)

They grew up together in the town of Winnsboro, yet their love story began just four years ago through volunteering with the local fire department. So, what better way to tie in that memory than officially leaving their wedding ceremony in this-- a convertible fire truck. And what a beautiful backdrop First United Methodist Church was for a wedding!

Many thanks to my friend and fellow photog Renee' Nicolo for accompanying me as second shooter this wedding! It is so important, in my opinion, to have a second camera capturing another point of view for moments that the main photographer may not be able to get to at the time. I truly am in love with Leather Craftsmen and their album quality. It is SO worth the wait! I've posted about them in the past, and also wanted to share a few more examples of that constant quality. They surely will stand the test of time which is what I want to accomplish for my clients. I want to create a family heirloom, to be enjoyed for many, many years; and, Leather Craftsmen helps make that possible! Not to mention their customer service is the BOMB :)!

The albums arrive via the hot UPS guy, oh wait, in a very professional black box with their logo.

Inside that box is the album, nicely protected in its very own black, velvet bag.

They are very customizable albums. I personally prefer a photo embedded on the cover with the couple's name branded into the genuine black leather.

I love how thick and sturdy the pages are!

And the way the album will lay flat when viewing it.

During album design, I prefer simplicity because it will always trump trendy! I think about the couple's grandchildren who will be viewing the album in the future and want it to appeal to them then, the same way that it appeals to us today.

My clients choose their 50 favorite wedding images via their online gallery, and thus begins the album design :) They are 10x10 in size and contain 24 pages.

Learning To Use A Camera

Often times I'm asked about how I learned to use my camera. First, let me just say that sometimes I look at my camera, three years later, and am still amazed that I really do know what all the buttons are for now. Once you learn it, it's somewhat unbelievable that there isn't more to it. It becomes second nature for you. Promise! And secondly, please note that I am a self-taught photographer. So, these posts will probably lack a whole lot of technical jargon and explanations that I'm sure are taught in actual photography courses.

So, how did I learn to use my camera? I will be putting it in a nutshell within this post, then expounding on each step within their own future blog post, so stay tuned :)

There was something within me that wanted-- passionately-- to make beautiful pictures, because life is just that-- beautiful. And, I was fortunate enough to have been blessed with a wonderful father-in-law who passed along his first digital camera to me when he upgraded. It is a Nikon D70, and I still use it to this day as my back-up camera. And from there, the journey begins. In October 2007.

There were SOOOOO many buttons. I was overwhelmed. However, I knew that behind all those buttons and functions were those gorgeous pictures that I drooled over when flipping through books and magazines. And, since my father-in-law was into cameras (even before digital) I had a great source to depend on when I just couldn't figure it out by reading my owner's manual.

Step one: I read and still utilize my owner's manual. It goes everywhere with me! And yes, I read that thing 4 times throughout the years, and even just tonight I referred to it (of my new camera) for an explanation of another function I became curious about. And I have my camera in hand at all times while reading, practicing what it is telling me. If I didn't understand what a word meant (iso, aperture, shutter speed, exposure, etc.) I immediately looked it up online for a better understanding.

Step two: I understood that I needed to be in charge of the outcome of my photos rather than the camera choosing the outcome for me. ::ahem:: Stopped using my camera in auto exposure mode. Once I made a pact never to switch over to auto anymore, I ventured to aperture-priority mode (A for Nikon, Av for Canon) which we will refer to as semi-auto; BUT, at least it wasn't full blown auto.

Step three: After killing myself with post-processing those skin tones (taken in semi-auto mind you), to perfect them to where I wanted them, I decided something HAD to give as my time became so much more precious with the birth of our first child in June 2009. I no longer had the time for editing that I had pre-child. And with a little push from the instructor of a workshop I attended in 2010, I became solely a manual shooter which has changed my overall straight out of camera (SOOC) shots dramatically! HANDS DOWN.

Voila! And there you have it. Easy peasy, huh? Stay tuned for more in depth explanations of steps 2 and 3.

And you know I can't leave you without a photo :) Here is one I captured while living in TN (where my photography journey began! And while I was a semi-auto shooter, I admit it). What an unbelievable sight this was though! That would be a hen in grey phase. And it is also turkey season now, so thought it was most appropriate for this post :) But don't shoot any of these with anything but your camera. tehe.

You charge WHAT for an 8x10?

As tax time rolls around yet again, I'm in the third year of preparing taxes on my photography business and it's NOT pretty. To run a successful photography business it is SO much more than a camera and some prints! Behind that $60- 8x10 print (and that's cheap for true, professional images!) there are many business expenses to be paid, such as the following:

photography equipment (which we ALL know is not cheap!)
editing software
business insurance
electricity
web hosting
business bookkeeping
gas and repairs for vehicles
business marketing
internet service
phone service
professional development

... and I could go on, and on, and on, and on. Oh and those taxes I mentioned too; don't want to forget to pay those!!!
These are exactly the things I did not know when starting out. I had no clue to be honest. NO CLUE. But when I decided to upgrade my camera last year (from the one that had been passed along to me for FREE, thank the good Lord above) I knew I was doing something wrong. How in the world do photographers survive when camera's alone cost a couple thousand smackaroos? And how do so many photographers still have a life beyond their computer? How do these photographers that I follow on facepoo and twitter have time beyond sessions and editing to exercise, cook for their families, do crafts with their children, etc.? I was on a mission. I needed to find a happy medium and good balance of my many hats in this life.

That's when I stumbled upon my happy place thanks to Alicia Caine's book, Happy Place: The Life Plan, Posing as a Business Plan. This book, put plain and simple, defines me. I needed help, I admit it. I was pulling numbers out of the air trying to run a business, and after three years of it, I found I was killing myself. And I realized this as I was still editing at 2am EVERY morning, even on weekends. This had become my routine. There was little devotion time in my life, zero exercise, no gardening, no crafting with my son, and many other things that I was missing in my life. Who had I become? I was unhappy and had already quit photography about 3 times. Just ask my husband. LOL But I love it tooooo much honestly to put my camera aside. It is a creative outlet for me. That's how I started in it, and that's how I aim to keep it. No longer will it become a chore to me. This book truly is "a common sense journey to the heart of your business!" which was the selling point for me. I needed something common sense. And I needed to find the heart of my business.

With that said, bring it ON 2011!!! I'm so pumped as to what yummy goodness becomes of this year :) And because a post is better with a picture, I leave you with a little picture of my heart, and another one of my happy places. I had time (thanks to that good ole book mentioned above) two weekends ago for a little family outing to the coast. I love my life!

A Baby Story

Not too long ago, I documented Jay and Nikki's maternity session. Last weekend, I had the awesome pleasure of welcoming their beautiful little girl into the world with my camera in hand! This was my first ever birth session and I KNOW it won't be my last. It wasn't until my friend and fellow photog Carrie of Carrie Workman Photography so beautifully documented the birth of my son that I even thought about photographers being present for this type of event. I'm the shy type, but when it was all said and done, I knew I wanted her to do this for us so that my husband would be able to absorb all that he could with the birth of our child without having to run around the delivery room snapping pictures for me. Because I would have wanted him to; you know, since that is just one event you can never re-play.

It was so hard to pick only a few images to share with you. Jay and Nikki, Jordyn is one lucky little girl to have you guys as parents! Blessings to you, as you embark on the most awesome journey of your lives!

Here is mommy's first embrace. I'm just so glad these were in focus because I was shedding a few tears of joy myself. tehe.

Loved this. As I rounded the corner to announce that Jordyn had arrived safe and sound, this is what unfolded. Here we have Jordyn's proud grandparents!

While Nikki was still in the delivery room, daddy Jay was summoned to the nursery for Jordyn's first bath. While the nurse prepared everything, Jordyn was screaming, but daddy came to the rescue. And she knew who he was and was comforted. And again, all of us on the other side of the window were BAWLING.

Jay, you will make an amazing father. Hands down. Don't you worry. :)

I have been participating in Becky Higgins' Project Life this year, and it has blessed me already beyond what words can describe, and it's only March! I started it in January and will continue it through the end of 2011. Then tackle one for 2012; oh yes, you better believe it!

I used to scrapbook, however, I just cannot find the time for it anymore these days between being a wife, a mommy, a photographer, a personal chef, a housekeeper, a teacher, a laundry service, a consultant, and then trying to work in exercise somewhere too. Fab Photog Shootout

Many times I feel that by being behind the camera 97% of the time I miss out on how truly nervous and uneasy clients sometimes are. Well... not this day! I had the opportunity to 'model' for a group of fab photogs, and they did the same for me! We had SO much fun plundering around abandoned buildings and traipsing through fields with furniture! After our little photo shootout of each other and the group, we had a wonderful dinner at B. Simpson's in Simpsonville. This evening was very much needed for this mom-tog! Here's a little peek at our fun.

Decided I would try my hand at practicing with my off-camera flash for a bit. LOVED the results! The sky was sooo beautiful. As is HMK! You can check out some of her work over on her blog where she talks a little about life, faith and photography :)

Not only did we have one camera on us as we modeled, we had FOUR. OH my.

And our lovely Lisa. She is just a genuine person all the way around. She is the very photographer who started me down the correct path as I was beginning my journey-- a mentor for me. You can check out her work at this link; she does a fabulous job with weddings! I also was able to photograph her maternity session about 7 months ago or so.

I've enjoyed getting to know these ladies over the past couple of months on a more personal basis away from Facebook :) So what is in store for March ladies?

TN House For Sale

The house at 3066 Lower River Rd. NW; Georgetown, TN 37336 is for sale. *sniff, sniff* This house was my first home (as in first time owning a home); and it was also my son's first home. I know it's just a house, but it holds some very special memories!

I will always remember this kitchen because it was THE BOMB. Loved the sink. Loved the storage. Loved the whiteness. (Is that a word?) I could always tell what needed to be cleaned!

Another aspect I loved was the open floor plan! This is what I could see from behind the bar in the kitchen. But not from that angle.

My son's first room/ nursery. Guest room. 2nd bedroom. Whatever you will.

The master bedroom. (Yikes. Bright!) Wish I had a picture of the closet! Oh did I love my closet. It was my escape many times; the one where I hoarded Dove dark chocolates when need be. The picture was actually taken from the bathroom/ closet.

Here we have the fireplace in the living room first. Second, the dining room minus the table. Oops. Had already moved it when the picture was taken. And you can see a little glimpse of the mud room over there. Another aspect I loved about this home as my husband is a hunter/ fisher and always needed a place to dump his stuff when coming home. It also served as the laundry room. OH my laundry room how I do miss you as well.

Just call up Chuck Jones of Remax Real Estate in Cleveland, TN-- 423.476.7300-- if your interest has been sparked! This house is located about 8 miles outside of Cleveland, TN and close enough to Chattanooga, TN for a lunch date and coffee break. LOVED this :)

Here's a little picture on the day we ~~moved~~ tried to move. It snowed a beautiful 6 inches! Our TN home sits on a hill for sure! There are 20 steps to reach the front door. I used them for exercise when I was pregnant. LOL

To the future homeowners, I hope you make as many memories in this cozy, little home as we did! OH and the neighbors both beside and across the road and down the road too are all some of the best people-- salt of the earth type of folks. We surely made some lifelong friends living on this property!

I miss you dearly little TN home.

As I think back to my senior portrait experience it went a little something like this: wait in line with 149 of my classmates; sit on a barrel and smile. Then stand behind a huge styrofoam cutout of my class year, and smile. Graduating high school is a HUGE milestone in life and I believe it should be well documented; and documented to reflect the individual you have become and are becoming!

I had the privilege of photographing my cousin Katherine last week! Katherine, you are a beautiful young lady and I am so proud of you! Best of luck in your endeavors wherever they may lead you! Enjoy your sneak-peek. :)

Why the Name Change?

I've slightly tweaked the name of my little biz for two reasons: one, from the beginning, I was hesitant to undertake this journey with my name as 'Charlotte Jennings Photography' for reasons that are now proving themselves true to me. I should have went with my gut feeling from the start. Let's just say, my real name + the internet = scares me to death! Second, after consulting with branding professionals, and well, my husband, lol, we've all determined that Charlotte Ashley (my middle name) just has a more 'Southern' feeling to it which is my heart! I am a Southerner. I love shrimp and grits; I love Live Oak trees with Spanish moss; I love salt marshes; I love tomato gravy and fried okra; and, I love a comfortable, yet humid evening sitting in a tree swing watching lightning bugs and listening to crickets chirping while my kiddo is running around barefooted trying to catch them.

Thus, we have Charlotte Ashley Photography from this point on! ;)

And because a picture is a must with any post, here is one I think back to alot when I start longing to be on the coast! I absolutely adore my doggie daughter : ) She's so full of life and wonder.

Couple 1: Brab and Jillian

I've always heard that when you meet the person you are supposed to marry, you just instantly know it. I now know it to be true. I met my fiance in December 2007, where we met through friends of friends. The instant our eyes met, were immediately drawn to each other.

I was a senior in college, and he was working as an agent for a commercial real estate company. We were at very different points in our lives, and this was not the only thing that would have made it unlikely that our paths would have otherwise crossed. Our backgrounds differ in the fact that I am from NY, and Brab was born and raised in South Carolina. Our first date was to go deer hunting, which I met with a lot of skepticism. The experience of our first date has led to many encounters in which Brab has truly taught me how to slow down and appreciate the details in what is going on all around us. I can remember how grateful and happy I was to be out there-in what seemed to be the middle of no where, to me. I will never forget sitting with him in that field, listening to crickets chirp, watching the sun go down and seeing the bright stars scattered across the sky. We have had many experiences like that since, and I have come to appreciate the details more, as well as cherish and value the time we get together. We are able to teach each other and show each other new experiences, and it's one of the things I have really come to appreciate about our relationship. Over the next two years we became more and more of a necessity to each other's daily lives and happiness.

The proposal: Before I begin, I have to say that I had absolutely no idea that he was thinking about proposing. I always knew I wanted to be his wife someday, but I just figured we would wait until I finished my graduate school program, in a few more years.

Brab planned a long weekend trip up to New York City. We spent a our time sight-seeing and enjoying each other's company. On the night before we were to fly home, October 23, 2009, we went out to a phenomenal dinner and we attended the Barber of Seville at the NYC Metropolitan Opera. After the opera, I wanted to take a picture outside of the beautiful building, but it had been pouring rain all evening. Almost miraculously, the rain stopped for about a 10 minute window of time. We stood in the middle of a rushing crowd of people, ready to hand the camera to the first person who made eye contact with us. After several minutes, a pleasant middle aged man finally agreed to take our picture. I turned to the side and prepared to pose, and I noticed Brab had dropped his program on the ground. For a second, I thought he fell down, and as I turned back to help him up I realized he was on his knee. I burst into tears. I don't remember all of what he said, but I can recall him saying "I've looked for you my whole life, and I have finally found you. Please do me the honor of becoming my wife."

Interesting side note: There were 2800 people at the opera that night, and we just randomly selected a photographer from the crowd that was passing us by. After snapping a few photos for us, the man behind the camera informed us that he proposed to his wife in the exact same spot 10 years before- Ocober 22, 1999. He continued on, saying that they are still happily married, which we decided to take as a good sign.

Brab is currently serving in Iraq. He is set to return on July 3, 2011. Our wedding is scheduled for October 8, 2011 in Charleston, SC. I would absolutely love to have Charlotte Jennings photography cover my wedding. It would be such an honor to have this special time in our lives preserved in photographs that we will be able to cherish for years and years. Due to unfortunate health issues in my parent's lives, they are both currently disabled and unable to assist with the financial aspect of the wedding. Brab is planning on paying for almost all of the wedding with money that he is making while he is overseas. The opportunity to win this package would eliminate a portion of the financial burden, and it would free up more funds to cover expenses for us to start our lives together.

Couple 2: Brian and Kelli

So, the story goes a little something like this…..

Brian and I went on a family trip to Gatlinburg Tenn. for Christmas. We arrived at our snow covered cabin on Sunday, December 12 2010. Like most people who haven’t seen each other in a long time, we played catch up with our family. Talking and eating, unpacking and laughing at each other. Before we knew it, it was time for bed. Monday morning arrives. There is nothing in the world like waking up to a beautiful sunrise over snow covered mountains. It’s just breath taking! Brian and I get ready for what I thought was a “normal” day. Little did I know Brian had other plans. It was about noon time when it all began! It was snowing outside, so we were in the living room chatting with family when Brian says, “I’m going outside for a minute”. I thought to myself outside? In the freezing Snow? Hunn… My older sister was in the kitchen, and looked out the window. So I asked what is he doing? She replied, “Nothing, just looking off the porch!” Brian came in the door and went up stairs to our room. I began to wonder, what is he doing? A few seconds later I would have my answer! Brian came down the stairs, and said, “Kelli, come up here with me.” I was hesitant at first, but then hurried up the stairs behind him. He then said,” Come out on our balcony with me.” I replied with “Brian, its like 7 degrees outside, are you kidding me?” :)...Brian, said,” just put your jacket and shoes on, and come out here with me.” (I wish I had a clue what was going on, I wouldn’t have given him such a hard time :) As I approached the sliding door, I could see where Brian had already been out there without me. I walked out on the snow covered porch, with snowy mountains in the background. As I looked to my left, there sat a Golden small box with a bow on a little wooden table. My heart sank! I began to open it and with every tear of paper, my heart was beating harder. It was a white box, with a black box inside. Once I opened the black box, my heart stopped. There sat the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. I looked up and my handsome boyfriend was down on one knee, grabbing my hand, and said the sweetest words,” Will you marry me”. With a tear in my eye and a faint beat in my chest, I replied with “YES”. We embraced each other, and stared out at the beautiful snow falling. At that moment I realized, I was going to be a bride, and marry not only my high school sweetheart, but my best friend and love of my life. Brian and I have been dating since I was 17 and he was 18. Now 22 and 23 we will become one, and continue our journey together.

A wedding is a once in a life time event. It is something that is close to any bride’s heart. I want my wedding to be photographed by someone who knows the in’s and outs of special moments. Who can capture things that will be admired for years. Someone, who’s got the same interest as myself and puts all their time and effort into making a great product. I really want CJP to photograph my wedding because I know I will have the best pictures of an event that will never take place again. Please choose me, to help my dreams come true :)

Couple 3: Nick and Jenna

The Proposal:

On December 29, 2010, Nick and I decided to spend a day just the two of us to celebrate our first Christmas together. We decided we were going to make each other gifts, and exchange them. He told me that we were going to spend the day together, go out to dinner, and then go to his Aunt Leslie's in Cuyahoga Falls and exchange our gifts there because his Aunt Leslie decorated her house all pretty.

So I had a doctor's appointment in the morning and when I went to leave I found a big present outside the door of my house and it had a post it that said, "Open Here". I opened it up and inside was a giant white teddy bear and another smaller present! I opened it up and inside was a letter.

The letter stated that today was going to be very special because it was our "first Christmas" together and the first Christmas Nick ever has had to spend with a woman that he loved. He also said that I would receive gifts periodically throughout the day but to NOT expect a ring- because I would be very disappointed. He said that he had to wait until about March to be able to buy me a ring. The letter began to tell a story about a young man who fell in love with a young woman…. and it also told a story about a wise and caring man who told him that having a successful, fulfilled life began with understanding the responsibilities in life, and how it is important to have them in the right order…. and so throughout the day I got a total of 6 letters, the next five described five responsibilities in life, and the order that they should be in.

In order to shorten up the story I will describe where I got each letter, and briefly what it said.

The next letter I received before my doctor's appointment and it was the #5 priority- Church & Family activities. These things are important, but it is always important to make sure that FAITH and FAMILY stay higher up in the priority list- and not getting too wrapped up in juggling all the activities. Nick also mentioned in this letter that even though I was nervous about going to the doctor- that he will always be here by my side, and he will always encourage me and support me.

The next letter I received AFTER my doctor's appointment, and it was the #4 priority- Work. Nick talked about how supporting me and our family is very important, but when you get too wrapped up in work- it can be destructive.

The next letter I received while we were out to dinner- and it was the #3 priority- Children. To love our children, guide them, and be their rock.

After we left dinner, we headed out to Cuyahoga Falls to his aunt's house- or so I thought. Well we were driving down there and I realized we were not going to Aunt Leslie’s.. so Jenna goes in panic mode because I think we are lost!!! I start yelling at Nick, “turn around turn around!!” And Nick is playing it cool like, “Jenna, I think one of these roads up here connects or something.” We are like in the friggin ghetto of Cuyahoga Falls. Then all of a sudden he’s like, “Well I have to go to the bathroom so I’m going to pull in here.” And he pulls into Stan Hywet which is this huge mansion thing that looks like a castle and they have a Christmas thing called “A Dickens of a Christmas” and as you walk through the house each room is a different scene from the story “A Christmas Carol”. So I say to him, “Was this planned???” And he finally said, “Yes, I wanted to surprise you because this is such a nice Christmas place.” He handed me another present, and I opened it up, and in it is another letter. Priority #2- ME! :) Jenna!! And our relationship… This letter was so beautiful, because Nick pretty much just told me how much I mean to him, how much he loves me, and how he has an undying and unconditional love for me…. Ohhh, he is the best.

So at this point I finally settled down and enjoyed the beautiful house and Christmas feeling. We walked around the manor, saw Santa Claus, and you could feel the Christmas spirit everywhere!!!!!

Then we walked outside the house and they have a beautiful light display. It is absolutely gorgeous!! So we were walking down this sidewalk that had lighted birch trees on both sides and he says to me, “Well I have one last gift for you, and it comes in a box.” And he pulls out a box… Lo, and behold, I open it up and … it's… ANOTHER LETTER! The last letter… Priority #1- God. (Obviously!) The letter talks again about the wise man who shared all of this with him, and how it is the key to a happy life. And quote, "God is number one, the piece that holds the rest of them together, it is the reason why we are together, it is the only reason we will be together forever." The letter ends with the verse Proverbs 30:18-19 "There are three things that amaze me- no, four things that I don't understand: how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, and how a man loves a woman." Nick states, "I don't understand how I can love you this much but I do!" So Nick says to me, "Well, that's the last gift!" So…. you're thinking.. JENNA.. DID YOU THINK HE WAS GOING TO PROPOSE? nope. Not at all. He kept telling me he wasn't going to!!!!! I didn't even second guess it.

So then we walk to this balcony and when you overlook the balcony there is a little lit-up village on the ground, and in the trees are these huge lit-up snowflakes.. and Nick and I are standing there and he starts to get a little weird and says, “Well in conclusion of all the letters, I just want to say how much I love you… etc..etc..” (I wasn't really paying attention.. Nick talks a lot!) BUT then he says, “And with your father’s permission, “ (gets down on his knee, he says something like--) “I want to ask you to do me the honor and marry me?” So.. I’m like, in super shock mode. And I don’t even know what to say!!!! I’m thinking, “IS he kidding? Is this really happening?? I thought this wasn’t going to happen for a few more months? When did he talk to my dad??” So I say, “Of course I will!!!!” And we kiss and hug, and then I start crying.. and then I say, “When did you talk to my dad????” So he told me the whole story and I was freaking out. Then he says, "The evening is not over yet!"

So then the rest of the evening his aunt Leslie set up this beautiful Christmas display with Nick and I’s Christmas tree, Christmas presents, cookies, hot chocolate, sparkling grape juice, and beautiful Christmas decorations. So we opened up more gifts and spent some time together being .. ENGAGED =) It was a wonderful time.. I am so lucky.. It was the most perfect engagement.

God has truly blessed me with a wonderful man- I am forever grateful!!!

Now we are getting married on September 24, 2011!!!!

In my opinion, women are most beautiful when they are pregnant! To me, it is a sure sign of God's presence because well, how can you hear a second heart beat coming from your own body and not think that something divine is occurring? And then later, as your child develops, taking on features from both father and mother, His creativity once again is evident! Oh, and we can't forget those little personalities they develop that you are sure came from only your spouse, of course-- my friends, I believe He has a sense of humor too.

I'm learning that maternity sessions might be my favorite, aside from weddings, to photograph as they represent the ultimate reason we are put upon this Earth. Children. I believe my photographic talent is God-given, thus I want to utilize it as best I can to return the thanks.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure to photograph some dear friends who are expecting their first child. Nikki is a friend of mine from high school, and through her, I've had the pleasure of getting to know her husband Jay, who is probably one of the funniest fellas I've ever met! After a fun little baby shower that day in Greenville, SC we made our way over to Spartanburg for some photos.

Jay and Nikki, little Jordyn is one lucky little girl to have you guys as parents! I can't even fathom the personality she will bring into your household coming from you two. LOL Thank you for allowing me to document this special occasion in your lives!

Nikki, you are beautiful. Just beautiful.

Project Life: Weeks 1, 2, and 3

As I reflect back on 2010, I do wish I would have had my camera handy a little more often for documenting my own crazy, beautiful life. The times last year that I became really busy with weddings and all that they entail, I feel as if I photographically missed out on some of my son's (now 18mths old) little 'firsts' and just everyday antics. I can't believe the time has passed so quickly. So, for 2011, I've decided that Becky Higgins' Project Life is just the motivation I needed to never put my camera away!

I have embarked on Project Life for four reasons. One, I've found myself wrapped up in pleasing clients photographically that I've put my camera aside for my life, the one thing I shouldn't do. I've already captured moments that wouldn't have been documented photographically otherwise because of Project Life. Two, to do something creative, because well, I just need to be creative with my life. It's a part of me! I used to scrapbook, however I have no time for that anymore, and with the urgency I'm feeling to capture this little boy's childhood, this gives me an easy creative outlet. Three, to challenge myself to be more creative with my camera as well, which can, in turn, only help my business. And four, to connect more with God in being more appreciative of this great life he is affording me!

I have also become a part of a private blog group which consists of 6 ladies so far who are all doing the same. Three from South Carolina, two from Arkansas, one from Idaho, and 1 from, hmm... not sure yet. It's neat to see the ramblings that are happening the span of the United States. I love this and our little group so much already!

I hope you enjoy along the way too as I will post a collage of each weeks photos for my faithful blog readers! Here are the first 3 weeks. We are well underway since January 1. If you would like photo explanation, just comment :)

A Tennessee December

I was beyond ready to return to Cleveland, TN for a visit/ vacation. I say vacation because we will always return to Cleveland during duck season or my hubby will truly lose his mind. The TN and Hiwassee rivers are a part of him now as are the fishing and duck hunting possibilities on those rivers. Just so happens he was able to work it in with a work trip in December! So off to TN we went for a week. We even camped out in our house. You know, the one we have been trying to sale for a WHOLE YEAR now. Urrr. While I was rambling around in between mommy group meetings and bunco evenings, I snapped a few photos for friends and wanted to share! ;)

I cannot believe we captured this adorable little smile because you have to be creative to have her even slow down for a second sometimes. Love her ;)

Praise the Lord for people willing to adopt. Because of this family, this little one has a functional home now. While in TN, we also visited the church we attended while living there and was present for the adoption/ dedication service for R. We even dedicated our little one too!

This week's photo challenge is entitled "Best Face Photo of 2010" to which I had to pick this face. Yes, it is my son. Every time I see his face, I'm flooded with so many emotions, as any mother would and should be. How could I not have been drawn to pick one of his MANY photos I took throughout 2010. The best part is, this is the first time some of you are seeing this photo unless you received our Christmas card this year. Here he is, little man at 17 months old (Nov. 2010). Wedding Highlights | 2010

When asked "when did you become a wedding photographer?", with 100% accuracy, I can safely say August 14, 2004-- the day I was married. I literally could have been my own wedding photographer because in my mind, I had all the shots planned out that I wanted preserved. I daydreamed about the day I would marry my high-school sweetie for SEVEN YEARS, so naturally I wanted it documented-- EVERYTHING-- down to the tiny pieces of tumbled beach glass that were scattered in the windows (that my mom and I spent many summer vacations collecting).

While taking 5 years to assist other photographers at weddings, 2010 was THE year-- the year that has afforded me some awesome opportunities as main wedding photographer.

As 2010 comes to a close, and as I reflect back over the love stories that I was able to capture, I wanted to share a few highlights from the year of weddings. Thanks to you all for the photographic experience I have gained this year; you will forever be remembered in the history of Charlotte Jennings Photography!

Since as long as I can remember I've LOVED to dance. In fact, that is one way my husband completely won my heart over. On our second date, we went to Scuffletown in Simpsonville, SC; and our first couples line dance together was to My Maria by Brooks and Dunn. Well, that tradition lives on in our family. We've been together now for almost 14 years and we are passing along our love of dancing to our children! And we made a video for you to see. Enjoy; and hope you have the Merriest of Christmases!

All Pleasure, No Pressure

When I was teaching agriculture, I had equipment in my shop and classroom-- tractor, smart board, band saw, computer, chainsaw etc.-- that I had to know like the back of my hand how to operate in order for the day to run smoothly. I didn't have time to think twice about how to work this equipment because I knew I would have to focus my energy on dealing with unruly students while teaching the dedicated ones. Thus, I spent countless hours learning how to use the equipment off the clock.

Just as with teaching, I also have photography equipment that I have to understand completely for when I'm in a session situation because each session differs and can change completely from what you envision. If you have no studio, and are solely an outdoor photographer, sometimes rain will postpone your session until later in the day when lighting situations just aren't favorable, thus flash will be needed. Sometimes the child you envision posing nicely, won't, and you have to quickly adjust camera settings to capture action rather than a still shot. Sometimes you have no time to adjust your flash for moments during a wedding reception, and have to rely on your camera and lenses to be able to deal with low light situations. And sometimes, as with teaching, to learn my equipment, I put in hours 'off the clock' to help myself prepare for future sessions.

A couple of weeks ago was one of those times. OH BOY did I have a great time in Charlotte, NC with a great friend and fellow photoggie. What I enjoyed the most was the stress-free, all pleasure, no pressure time I was able to spend with my camera, and be able to practice posing and technique with a fabulous couple-- who were in wedding attire. Did you know that one of the hardest parts of photographing a bride/wedding is knowing how to NOT blow out the detail of the wedding dress? So how do you do that if she has dark skin tones? I was so up for doing this session because there were so many lighting obstacles I was to be faced with. I needed time to learn with no pressure. And then, in the rush of packing my son and myself to head upstate and prepare for another session too, I totally forgot my flash (ugh. OMGah.) which would have saved me time in post-processing. However, not having it, I had to consider post-processing, and I was constantly working my camera settings and thinking post-processing to accomplish what I was envisioning.

Patrick and Kristen had a Hawaiian destination wedding back in September. They so graciously agreed to dress up again for us and endure a 2 hour session in 40-50 degree weather! So kudos to Kristen, most of all, who rocked it out even though I know she was FREEZING. Thank you both for allowing us to capture these wonderful images! And many thanks as well to the awesome Gwinn's Florist for providing a bouquet for the session.

Two Years of Sweetness

It was my pleasure to be able to photograph sweet J again last week for her 2 year milestone! You may remember her from the fun time had at the apple farm back in September. Boy, oh boy, did we have an adventure! And may I just say that this is the fastest 2 year old I've ever seen! We had so much fun chasing her :)

After making our way over to Cleveland Park, we spent a little down time by the pond feeding the "duck- ducks."

This special mommy moment was captured as J ran as fast as she could to hug her :) Aww. I really need a photographer to come and follow me around for a couple of hours. It's moments like these that every mother needs to have captured!

For a little down time, J enjoyed a few books with mommy too before calling it a day!

I have thoroughly enjoyed capturing your sweet girl... who is about to be a big sister! Thank you so much for the opportunity, and congratulations; I just know J is so excited to have a baby sister on the way! :D

High school sweeties they are! She was a freshman; he a junior, and thus began their love story. After deciding marriage was the next step for their lives so that they could be together wherever the Army leads, he came home from Arizona to marry her November 20 in Conway, SC. Only a few weeks before, both of their worlds were turned completely up-side-down with parents battling cancer, so they put a halt to the wedding planning and decided that a quaint little ceremony and gathering of close friends and family was only appropriate for the time.

Jarred and Jessica, may you always enjoy the places you will travel and experience from here on out! Your wedding was simply beautiful. And thank you both for allowing me to capture the essence of your special day!

We were able to take a few moments before the ceremony to capture some stunning images of the two of them. Gorgeous! Just gorgeous.

Everything about the details were just perfect. Jessica planned for a rustic theme using purple and ivory as the colors for the day.

Did I mention the food was wonderful? Butter beans. Chicken spaghetti. Ham. Macaroni and cheese. Green bean casserole. Etc. They had a country menu and the family that was present pitched in and made everything happen smoothly. Food and all! I love weddings that are so family oriented.

From the little ceremony area, to the outdoor living area, to the mason jars full of sweet tea, to the purple and ivory, here is yet another bride that was after my own heart. Beautiful and crafty all the way around!

Love you guys dearly. Enjoy Washington State and let us know when you venture this way for a homecoming :)

It's a classic tale-- two hearts, joined together during geology class. But hey, it might be just me, but I think these two were learning more than the origin, history, and structure of the earth.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Mike and Celeste's wedding and reception at the breath-taking Gassaway Mansion in Greenville, SC. Not only were they the host venue for the ceremony, but also provided the florals and day-of details. And after a beautiful celebration, these two lovely's have made their way to the island of St. Maarten for the honeymoon. Maggie + Michael | Newberry, SC Wedding Photographer

After a series of text messages anonymously sent by a friend, Michael and Maggie were bound to continue what this friend had started. And that is exactly what they did, making it official October 30 with a beautiful ceremony at St. Philip's Lutheran Church in Newberry, SC and reception at The Waldrop Place, also in Newberry.

I first met Michael during my college days in Forestry at Clemson University. Michael, I've enjoyed every moment I've ever been around you! And Maggie, you are a darling; I'm so glad I've been able to get to know you more this past year! I wish you both the best as you begin this new journey in your lives.

And so as you guys waste away on that tropical island (jealous.) know that I'm very thankful that you both considered me in your search for a wedding photographer. Enjoy this sneak peek of the fabulous images to come of your beautiful day!

I cannot stress to you how much I adore both of these ladies :) That's Deena on the left-- you know, the bride I was able to photograph back in April.

If I could plan a wedding all over again, this would be the dress! It was so beautiful and fit Maggie's style and personality PERFECTLY! Maggie was a bride after my own heart with everything from the dress, to the rings, to the decorations, to the toe ring :) and so on.

How To Choose Your Wedding Photographer

When you think about your wedding, what do you remember? Me personally-- most of my memories are from what I saw in my professional wedding images, because let's face it, the day is such a joyous, nervous, crazy, exciting, tear-jerking, emotional kind of day. I am so incredibly thankful for my wedding photographs! I would gladly pay that all over again for the memories my photographer captured. Not only were there the images of my husband and I and all the detail and time we put into our big day, but there were also those pictures of grandparents that have since passed that I cherish so much. But some of you may be wondering, why do wedding photographers cost so much?

Your wedding photographer will be at the top of your expenses when planning a wedding-- without a doubt. From a photographer's standpoint-- for an eight hour wedding: I won’t bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time, and is explained in a little more detail here.

Shoot and burn photographers will cost a lot less, but you need to think about how you plan to use the images you’ll receive. The vendors that support a full-service photographer DO NOT work with brides directly.

Learn the differences between photojournalistic and traditional styles, candids and formal posed shots—and select a photographer who specializes in the style you want or will do a mix of styles. Full-service photographers often offer a mix of styles whereas shoot and burn photographers may only offer candid photojournalistic shots.

Determine whether the photographer can deliver both black and white photos and color photos. Consider both your personal taste and the type of wedding you are planning when deciding your preferences.

Look at sample albums that include an entire wedding from start to finish, rather than just a few select shots. Try to view two or three weddings in this way.
Look for consistent technical quality (composition, lighting, exposure, etc.) and good variety, as well as whether the people in the photos seem at ease. Do the photos capture the excitement and emotion of the occasion and tell a good story?

Be sure the sample work you see was done by the same person you’re considering hiring as your photographer. Many studios have more than one photographer and the sample work doesn’t always indicate this.

Understand in detail how the photographer works and charges to effectively comparison shop. How long will the photographer stay at the event? Will there be an assistant? Is back-up equipment available? Can you provide a list of specific photos you want taken? What exactly is included in the costs quoted? What about proofs, negatives and/or digital files? How long will it take to get your proofs and your album?

Do you click? Personality is as important as anything else. The last thing you need on your wedding day is someone you and your guests don’t feel comfortable with. If possible, try and meet the person who will photograph your wedding to ensure that you’re comfortable working together.

Ask for references and call them. Past customers can give you insights you won’t get from the photo studio.

Not just so that I know who it is, but just because I'm a lover of all music-- except heavy metal-- and my memories made with people are packed into my long-term memory by a song. Jason is 'Cowboy Take Me Away'; Nikki is 'Walk it Out'; Heather is 'Gettin' Jiggy With It'; Christie is 'Give Me Your Eyes'; Jennifer is 'Gunpowder and Lead'; and the list goes on.

If I could give myself a ringtone, it would have to be 'American Honey'-- Lady Antebellum. And because every post needs a picture. Here's a picture of my heart-- some American Honey.

The ole bloggeroonie is long overdue for one of these Hubby Humor posts-- life lived with my husband is never dull. So he finds great joy in locating native grasses in his wanderings and thus decides collecting and scattering even more of the seed would be a wonderful thing. He makes sure I note his shirt pocket full of Eastern Gamagrass seed on the way home one night, to which I replied, "you may take them home ONLY if you promise to spread them and, you know, not leave them piled up on our dryer or something." So 6 months later-- yup, they have become one with the dryer.

I'm so proud to finally have a sister! One of my brother's tied the knot last weekend with a lovely ceremony and reception at The Bird House at Mountainview in Inman, SC. Being involved in the wedding myself as a bridesmaid, I was unable to wrangle my son as well as catch many spare moments to grab my camera. But I'm so sure Mandy Michels with Shutterbugs Photography caught all the magic of the day! I, however, was able to be a part of their day photographically by capturing their engagement session and Rhonda's bridal portraits. Here are two of my favorites from that day. Rhonda, you were a stunning bride! Thank you for loving my brother like you do :)

I'm beginning to wonder what I was thinking wearing white shoes with my wedding gown 6 years ago. Why didn't I rock it out like Rhonda? GORGeous.

And so I must admit, I was a little bummed, ok a lot bummed that I didn't snap any of my son in his OH so cute tuxedo the day of the wedding, so we dressed him back up a few days later for his very own mini-session. I dried the boutonniere so it at least is original! tehe. Cutest little 14 month old you will ever lay eyes upon, right here.

And you know, this little man can't wait to have a cousin to play with! LOL Just kidding guys, enjoy a couple years to yourselves :) Kiss, kiss.

Fripp and Hunting Islands, SC: 2010 Vacation

One lovely, Fall evening, about two years ago, while living in TN, we made the trek to the quaint little town of Sweetwater to have dinner with our dear friends, Seth and Carrie. After dinner, while sipping Carrie's yummy lattes, we made plans for both couples to vacation together in the Caribbean. Seriously. Neither couple had kids nor planned to; no restraints whatsoever. I was drooling at the thought that was sure to become reality!

And now, two years passed, two moves occurred (one couple to Arkansas and one couple to South Carolina) and two kids later, we finally managed to make our oceanic vacation. We opted for the coast of SC however, since the four of us have now become six. Gus man is 14 months old, and Vivi is 7 months old; and we have surely agreed that an arranged marriage is a must for these two. We spent a week chillaxin on Fripp Island and eating some marvelous seafood. I even celebrated another birthday while there; and Seth and Carrie celebrated 5 years of marriage too. Later in the week, we ventured to Hunting Island for a little mini-session for the new family. Enjoy this little peek at what joy a child brings to life!

Here is Vivi's first step {ever} into the ocean. Now I have "ever" emphasized, for you Seth. That's our story and we're sticking to it, right? We understand you were being your usual sweet self and just taking miss Vivi out for a stroll while momma finished up some work.

Carrie, you're a natural! And to think we both thought this wouldn't be wonderful.
AWWW. Seth swore this was the most kissing action he had received since little Vivian was born. Hmmm? ok.

Seth and Carrie, we enjoyed it and we're so glad you joined us; and you know we can't wait to explore the western turf with you guys.
Now after Vivi was done with the picture-taking, Carrie so graciously offered to snap some of us if I would instruct her on what to do. Here is one that I will forever be thankful for; thank you, thank you, thank you, so much Carrie for this shot! I love it.
And thanks to my sweet husband for this shot. Grabbed the camera at just the right moment!
We enjoyed every moment guys-- especially those crab cakes. And seriously, we will break down and do it-- we will fly. So let's make that Idaho vacation happen!

OH... and I have to give a BIG shout out to our husbands who kept the kids while Carrie and I enjoyed a day of shopping in Beaufort.

Second Shooter Shoes

I have a new found appreciation for wedding photographers. Before this year, I had only been the second shooter at weddings, and decided I could handle being main photographer. While yes, I feel I am succeeding in that role, it's always nice to step back into my second shooter shoes and just let my creative juices flow while observing, learning, and assisting the main photographer. A Year, Some Bees, and a Band

This post is dedicated to helping me survive the first year of a second baby Jennings--when and if that day occurs of course. These are some baby items I could. not. have. lived. without. My husband is very appreciative as well. tehe. This post is also dedicated to the many snapshots (the ones not already posted) that I captured of my little dude as a challenge to myself-- the items and mannerisms that define him and his first year of life.

Praise Baby DVD Collection. : Oh how soothing you are, not just for baby but for momma too! And thank you for the 25 minutes stretches of time that I can read, or do just whatever I need to without interruptions.

Moby Wrap : Thank you Moby Wrap for providing relief for my back after being so frail from 24 hours of labor. You da bomb. And for the 50 something different ways of using you to tote my little dude around.

Car Seat Carrier: Hmm... you have been more to us than a carrier and car seat. You have been my son's first potty and rocking chair as well. For the first 6 months, my son decided the only place he would poo his diaper was ONLY if he was in his car seat carrier. So needless to say, that thing went EVERY where with us. A poopy diaper = a calmer baby, at least for us. And after his movement and the diaper change, he would rock it out-- seriously, he learned to rock himself-- in his carrier while watching the Praise Baby DVDs which provided mama some down time as well. So thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Zac Brown Band : The song Free to be more exact. Without you Zac Brown, I would have had some very stressful car rides due to screaming baby. But the violin intro to Free is miraculous. Immediate calming effect, and I am not lying when I say immediate.

Happiest Baby on the Block : This book and the five S's were a GOD-send for us. It provided much needed periods of 3 or 4 hours of straight up, uninterrupted sleep during the first months of life. Enough said.

Burts Bees : Thank you for the safe and natural gift of no stretch marks Burt and your bees. And... for the bath products for my little one that are completely natural. No sodium laureth sulfate. No fragrances. LOVE.

Diaper Genie II : Whew. I love you. You are not only the storage for it, but yes, you are the s*$#. LOL As embroidered by my MIL, we don't call him that for nothing! lol

Bum Genius cloth diapers: Thank you for a pin-less, velcro, money-saving alternative to disposable diapers. I do cringe at the thought that my poopy diapers from almost 30 years ago are still in a landfill somewhere. We use the Bum Genius 3.0 diapers that grow with the child from newborn to 35 lbs.

I love this picture because it shows how he LOVED and still loves to have something stringy in his hand to soothe him. I don't know, all babies may do that, but I thought it was cute. I also love the green paci. He loves that thing... it has replaced the carrier for pooping. He has to have that now to concentrate. LOL AH. My life revolves around poop. (This is the stringy top of a toboggan hat)

He loves his daddy, and even better, riding on his daddy's shoulders. It helps him toot. Ahaha. We have one little gassy boy!

Savoring Life

Every time I have my camera in my hand I'm reminded to savor my life. For some women it's watching movies, or shopping, or reading, or baking that brings them to their 'happy place,' but for me it's picture-taking. Life is beautiful. Smiles are beautiful. Trees and nature are beautiful. And I'm so thankful for the life I am blessed with! During these economical hard times, I've been so fortunate to be able to continue being home with our son and dabble in photography part-time. I could not think of anything that would make me any happier. It's true. Even though my secret stash of dark chocolate makes me happy, it doesn't make me that happy ;)

I recently-- ok, about a month ago. I'm so behind!-- attended a workshop in Union, SC put on by Rachel of Savor Photography where we were better aquainted with our cameras ie. manual mode. Yes, I said it, manual mode. I must confess, while I know how to use my camera manually, I normally result to semi-manual because full manual just scares me to death; BUT I've forced myself on the last three sessions to use it! Go me. We also had the opportunity to practice on this beautiful little lady. Thanks to everyone who made this day possible-- Rachel, HMK Photography who was our host, our model, and all my photoggie friends who joined in! Best of luck to you all.

Wedding Albums

Last week I was so excited because one of my Leather Craftsmen wedding albums arrived at my doorstep... so excited that had I been home when it was delivered, I probably would have tackled the guy.

Album design has been a struggle for me-- should I offer options for all three design types: clean and neat, modern, and ultra-detailed? I like them all, but essentially I decided I needed to LOVE what I offer to my clients; and what I love needed to reflect Charlotte Jennings Photography in all it's essence. The wedding album is nonetheless a family heirloom that will be admired by generations to come. It should be able to stand the test of time. Thus I decided on simplicity. Less is more; and simplicity will always trump trendy. Always. It's kind of like the guy in high school who ALWAYS wore overalls and when you see him 30 years down the road, he still has on overalls. You remember that guy. By name. He and his personality were not lost in the trend.

One Year of Gusypoo

Ok. I realize it is now August, and our son's first birthday was June 26 and I am just now posting pictures. *gasp* I can't even believe it. And it has taken me two months to accept it. Just kidding. I've just been so wrapped up in my biz that all I could do was take the pictures and just pray for spare moments in between my wifely duties/ naps/ feedings/ business photo editing/ album designing etc. to process personal photos. The good news-- I did take the photos on time :) So this post is dedicated to posting photos of my son that we have enjoyed but have not yet shared. Check out this post to see the update on the 'monkey' series I took to document his growth in the first year.

And this is our little Gus/ Guspy/ Gusty/ Gus Gus/ Gustopher/ Gusypoo in all his cuteness at 1 year. Yes, that was a tear that just ran down my cheek.

I believe he is saying "mommy you are number one!" here. Oh, ok. Never mind. LOL

Awaiting Baby Ada

Being new to mommyhood myself, and extremely thankful for those photographers that invested their time into my pregnancy (Hometown Photography by Renee' Nicolo) and delivery (Carrie Workman Photography) and knowing how much I cherish every photo, well and cry everytime I look at them, I decided that the least I could do is always pay it forward for my fellow photographers. And the lovely lady featured here was actually the very one that helped begin my journey. Thank you so much Lisa (Lisa Bell Photography)! I enjoyed meeting you and Jeff, and I can't wait to see all the lovely photos of little Miss.

We ventured out to Musgrove Mill State Historic Site in Clinton, SC for our session. A big shout out to the ranger for pulling an extra hour of work so that we could utilize this beautiful site.

Lisa, you look absolutely stunning. Ada is so lucky to have you two for parents :)

So sweet. He adores you two girls :)

Ahahaha. I love it! I love being surrounded by people who like to laugh as much as I do. Life is too short not to laugh... all the time!

Lisa is one crafty young lady. Just read this post about Ada's room. And if you notice, the belt she is wearing here, which she made, is also from the same fabric as Ada's bedding, curtain, and accent pillow. Crafty, crafty. Well, to someone who doesn't sew. Ever. Well, I do know how to sew buttons back on. Does that count?

Brandon + Betsy {in love}

My friendship with this couple stems all the way back to my days at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC). Betsy was also a South Carolinian who found her way to the georgeous plains of South Georgia where I'm sure she spent endless evenings tearing up those good ole dirt roads and hanging out in weird places like peanut fields too. We new each other's faces, spoke here and there, shared some captain crunch from the mess hall, and enjoyed those infamous mud bogs and tractor pulls... ok, ok. Enough reminiscing :) But we both later made our way to Clemson University and this is where she and I both met Brandon. A mutual friend introduced these two because Betsy was the exact description of Brandon's fantasy bride. I guess indeed she was because they are working on 5 happily married years together. Kudos to Ellen :)

Thanks guys for allowing me to explore your awesome land! You have a beautiful place and I'm bringing little Gus over some day to romp with your kids :) And to add, for any future clients here, want to know how to knock a few $ off your print order? Feed me :) (OH... and don't get mad at me when I show up late to your photo shoot because I got lost. hehe) These guys brought us a picnic; a totally random one. And it sure beat sandwiches and chips. Folks, we had BBQ sandwiches, pasta salad, and SWEET TEA. Thanks Betsy for helping me get lots of photography done that night because I was totally up until like 3am because I never drink tea, well, or any caffeine. lol. Ok, so on to your sneak-peek. My Dearest Blog,

A thousand apologies for neglecting you the past month. I know you understand, like you say, but please allow me to explain.

For every 5 hours behind the camera at a wedding, there is about 20 hours (or more) of time behind the computer backing up images, editing, saving, re-saving, converting, re-sizing, blogging, emailing, accounting, order placing, order approving, re-ordering if not approved, order packaging, order shipping, album designing, album approving, album shipping, etc. For each wedding. And as you noticed, I had several back to back.
And oh, great news, in the middle of all that-- our sweet baby boy turned 1 year old! and started crawling, then walking finally last Sunday, 7.18.10 (actually walking, not just 2 steps or so)! There will be, I promise, a WHOLE lotta pictures for you from these events.
We had a family reunion for the Donehue side of the fam. Then, we had a family reunion for the Feltman side of the fam. 2 separate weekends.
I also had a couple of client meetings for 2011 weddings.
We made a brief trip to Dale Hollow Lake in Celina, TN for the July 4th holiday.
The harvest is ON!
There has been a couple of sicknesses involving fever, but all is well now, praise the Lord.
ETC.

This photographer and mama is WORE out-- but having the time of my life! I couldn't imagine it any other way ;) I must add that I'm totally ready for some fun in the sun and sand with some fantabulous friends! My little man and I will be trying out that slip-n-slide sooner than later too.

Huntington Beach State Park Wedding: Caroline + Brad

I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of one of my cousin-in-laws (is that correct terminology?) last weekend at Huntington Beach State Park located in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. After much thought and planning, Caroline and Brad opted for a beach wedding and I'm so glad they did! How beautiful it was! So... they made the trek, along with friends and family, all the way from Tennessee.

Brad and Caroline, it was my pleasure capturing your big day and I hope you enjoy this sneak-peek of what is to come! Many thanks to my pa-in-law for enduring the humidity and heat with the fellas to capture their side of the story!

She even brought her husband along who played the steel drum at the wedding and was the dj at the reception! Check out some of the work provided by All in the Details. Each bouquet had a little ladybug-- LOVE.

White Oak, SC Wedding: Ashley + Jarrod

It seems only like yesterday (but was actually 3 or so years ago) that I was sitting on the porch with Jarrod's mom after the opening day dove hunt replying, "No ma'am. I sure don't have a sister." Well, Jarrod met his match not long after that conversation; and, I'm pretty sure we could have been sisters :)

It's another hometown romance-- knew each other from around town, however, never dated until after most of their college days were over. And so now, Ashley, if only you can keep that fishing rod out of Jarrod's hand, the fish out of the sink, and that cell phone off his ear (and my husband's) long enough to check this out, know that your wedding was AmAzInG! We're so lucky to have such wonderful friends, and we wish you both much happiness in your marriage! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day. Enjoy your sneak-peek!

6 Months of Daniel

Since my son came along 11 mths ago (HOLY COW how time flies!), I've developed an interest in lifestyle photography. There are so many daily routine activities that we momma's need pictures of to document the many memories of our little ones' babyhood-- reading that special book, bath time, feedings, all the diaper changing, the crazy human tricks we do to extract that adorable, toothless smile, bedtime/ naptime routines, the activities our babes are fascinated with, and the list goes on and on and on and on and... ok.

Recently I've had the pleasure of finally meeting Daniel-- the son of one of my childhood friends. We had a ball playing piano, scaring the cat, pulling books from the shelves, and greeting Daddy as he came home from work. Daniel's mom and I both have this book, Love You Forever. Let me just tell you, I become teary-eyed every time I read this book.

During his diaper changes, Daniel loves to reach out for mommy's face and play with her hair. He's not too fond of his sippy cup just yet though. :)

After playing a little while, we decided to see if Daniel would let us capture him by himself. Here he is smiling at momma. Love those teeth! That boy sure does have his momma's eyes!

So. stinking. cute. This is mommy's childhood chair in Daniel's nursery. He has recently discovered his fingers too. LOL Woah duck.

After Daddy came home, we decided to venture outside for some family photos. LOVE your property!!!

Camp McCall Wedding: Kimberly + Ryan

My father-in-law informed my husband the day we were married that he was not only marrying me, but my family as well. I had never thought about it before then, but it's OH so true :)

Ryan is one of eight children, and Kimberly is one of four-- and what great families you both have! I could tell that there truly is always room for one more! On both sides. Ryan and Kimberly were engaged over a year ago and through the great world of FaceBook, I constantly could tell that their eagerness to be married and grow old together never dwindled one bit.

After the oh-so-great, O'Charley, played a role in these two meeting, Ryan proposed at Reedy River Falls during a horse and buggy ride. AWWWW. How sweet is that?!?!

Ryan and Kimberly, if you have a chance to put aside those umbrella drinks to access the Internet (I wouldn't, but just in case!), know that your wedding was FABULOUS! Beautiful. All the way around. I'm so thankful that I was afforded the opportunity to capture your day! Enjoy your sneak-peek of the awesome images to come!
